How New Zealand Was Formed (Maori Mythology) - By Renae

Around 1000 years ago, Maui came with his four friends. One day Maui and his friends were sailing. He was finding a place. Once he found it he knew he was close, he could feel it.
So he put his whale's tooth hook on a piece of rope. Then he threw it into the sea. He waited for a while.  But then all of a sudden there was a mighty pull on the rope. Maui pulled and pulled. All of a sudden a large fish appeared and it was a great stingray. Maui and his friends passed out because they got tired of pulling the large fish.

Next morning Maui and his friends woke up and saw a large stingray. They were surprised. OMaui's one touch changed everything! Tree came, flowers grew, lake, rivers and grasses were everywhere, and the land came into being. That’s how the North Island was formed.

Then Maui was in a rain storm. Maui and his friends froze.  It was too cold.  Their waka became mountains. Trees grew, plants grew, lakes, and rivers formed. That’s how the South Island was formed.
